Meath Local Sports Partnership and Hockey Ireland have teamed up to roll out the Secondary School Indoor Hockey Programme. The aim of the programme is to introduce 1st and 2nd year students to the Sport of Hockey in a social, structured, supportive and enjoyable environment.
Description: Schools will receive 6 school visits from a Hockey Ireland coach who will engage with students to provide comprehensive training sessions over a six-week period. Sessions will take place in the school sports hall at a suitable time by arrangement with school and respective PE teachers and equipment will be provided for the duration of the training period. Teacher training will also be provided.
Sample session plan
Week 1. Intro to hockey, basic rules, how to grip the stick, basic ball control and dribbling games
Week 2. Recap from week 1 – Push pass games, possession games – 3 v 3
Week 3. Dribbling games – Introduce Indian dribble and reverse push pass technique – 3 v 3
Week 4. 1 v 1s leading into 2 v 1s – goalkeeping, shooting
Week 5. Tackling techniques – Shooting on goal – 4 v 4s
Week 6. Skill based warm up – 6 v 6 games with goalkeeper
Sessions will be usually 1 hour long
