Minister Thomas Byrne officially opens the 3×3 basketball court in Kilmainhamwood!
This development is part of the wider investment by Meath Local Sports Partnership in small scale outdoor infrastructure. This funding was provided in 2024 by Minister Thomas Byrne when he was the Minister for Sport and Physical Education under the Participation Nation measure.
The Participation Nation measure includes investment in small scale capital infrastructure along with developing biodiversity in the local area.
Meath LSP were successful in securing funding for the installation of:
The developments are fully accessible and available to the broadest range of users. Kilmainhamwood Area Development Association (KADA) will be instrumental in running basketball programmes over the coming months for residents and visitors to the area. This will be complimented by the excellent Lindentree café and bakery onsite, which is operated by Ailbhe O Reilly.
Meath LSP are working closely with the members of KADA and An Taisce to oversee the development of the biodiverse native woodland habitat on site. The Environmental Education Unit of An Taisce runs the Learning About Forests (LEAF) programme nationally; one of their initiatives is the An Choil Bheag programme.
Part of the An Choill Bheag programme creates outdoor living classrooms. Meath LSP are delighted to work with the pupils and teachers of the Kilmainhamwood National School who will help create the woodland and hedgerow habitat that will then be studied and managed as part of a longer-term educational initiative. It is based around practical sustainable tree planting and long-term woodland and eco-system education, management and practical skills.
