Get Active Parents

GAP (Get Active Parents) is physical activity programme which targets parents of school going children. The aim of the GAP programme is to provide physical activity and educational workshops for parents in a safe, fun and structured environment. The long term aim of the GAP programme is for parents to recognise the importance of physical activity in their children’s lives and for them to become instigators of that activity.

The programm hopes to attain the following outcomes for parents:

-  higher levels of physical activity outside of the 1 hour weekly session.

 - increased involvement in extra curricular activities with their children.

- increased engagement with other parents on the programme and with other activities within the school (not necessarily physical activity based).

Parents become more active, learn new activities, learn and recognise the importance of physical activity for the children, learn how to play games with their children and become more involved in school time activities. The schools benefit from more engagement with parents, who are comfortable participating in activities within the school, so taking the next step to assisting with after school time activities and sports days will be a lot easier for them.

GAP has been implemented in 7 schools so far in 2011. Parents have been participating in activities such as Dance, Pilates and Yoga. Over 110 parents have taken part in the programme this year.

Meath LSP plan to implement the programme in an additional 3 schools before the end of the year.
