Games for Life

In May 2010 Meath Local Sports Partnership introduced our Games for Life Programme to older people’s groups and members of Active Retirement groups.

Games for Life aims to provide Bowls, Kurling and Boccia equipment at a reduced cost and training in the games to older people, community groups, secondary school children and disability groups.

Meath Local Sports Partnership began delivering the Games for Life Programme in May and to date 25 groups have availed of equipment. 116 people have been trained in bowls, boccia and Kurling. The purpose of the training is to equip the representatives with sufficient knowledge and skills which enables them to go back to their group and demonstrate to the group how the activity runs. Already 500 older people and disability representatives in Meath have been impacted by this initiative.

The Games for Life programme reached new heights in 2011 with 33 active retirement and disability groups having now availed of Bowls, Boccia or New Age Kurling equipment.

Boccia League

Meath Local Sports Partnership commenced the Games for Life boccia league in January 2011. Over 40 teams made up of active retirement groups and disability groups from across Meath participated in the league. The league proved to be a huge success as it provided groups with the opportunity to be both more physically active and to interact with each other.
On Tuesday 14th June in Simonstown GFC the top 4 teams in the league met in the semi finals. St Clares played Moynalty and Dunboyne Rehabcare met Beaparc. They were 2 hotly contested matches with St. Clares and Dunboyne making it through to the final.
The final was an exhibition of boccia as both groups demonstrated a high level of skill and precision. After 6 months of league games, the Games for Life boccia league title came down to the final ball. That final ball crowned Dunboyne Rehabcare as boccia league winners for 2011.
